Building Idea

Here is what I did on SketchUp based on my sketch from last Monday.

Monday, February 10, 2014

Notes from the Feb. 10 Presentation:

  • Libraries are the only places that are an extension to people's homes
  • Libraries are run by the government
  • Some are more urban and some more suburban
  • It feels like home because you can study, do work/play on the computer, but it is also different because there are activities for everyone
  • Libraries belong to everyone in the community
  • Library Revolution: no more central desk, much more comfortable and casual environment and it feels much more luxurious
  • Librarians are no longer controlling everyone
  • There are new functions of libraries that serve the entire community
  • There are adult education centers, teen rooms, Sat. and Sun. programs, etc.
  • Sitting areas in suburban ares (place to rest)
  • New seating styles encourage interactions with other people at the library
  • Lots of glass so people from the street may see inside
  • New seating is by the glass
  • New libraries are very open which makes them a public magnet
  • Technology is very important

Structural Engineering Intro

Hi Team,

The following link is for a intro to structural engineering book I used as an undergraduate in college.  I uploaded it to my google drive.  Its a good overview of basic structural engineering concepts and how structures and loads are idealized to make preliminary calculations.  Please let me know if you have trouble accessing the link.

These are some ideas I had if we were to do the bridge idea I had connecting two parts of the library (the renovated section and the Brand new section).

Bakersfield -Geotechnical/Geological Information

Hi Team,

The following are some links on geotechnical information for the site.

This link is a geological map of the area.
http://www.quake.ca.gov/gmaps/GAM/bakersfield/bakersfield.html

These Links show some boring logs and geotechnical tests for construction sites in the bakersfield area.  We can probably use these reports to make assumptions on our site.
