Notes from the Feb. 10 Presentation:

  • Libraries are the only places that are an extension to people's homes
  • Libraries are run by the government
  • Some are more urban and some more suburban
  • It feels like home because you can study, do work/play on the computer, but it is also different because there are activities for everyone
  • Libraries belong to everyone in the community
  • Library Revolution: no more central desk, much more comfortable and casual environment and it feels much more luxurious
  • Librarians are no longer controlling everyone
  • There are new functions of libraries that serve the entire community
  • There are adult education centers, teen rooms, Sat. and Sun. programs, etc.
  • Sitting areas in suburban ares (place to rest)
  • New seating styles encourage interactions with other people at the library
  • Lots of glass so people from the street may see inside
  • New seating is by the glass
  • New libraries are very open which makes them a public magnet
  • Technology is very important
