Structural Design

Some key basic structural information to consider:
- Loads on a structure:
  • Gravity Loads: dead loads (permanent loads such as weight of the structure, flooring, etc.), live loads (loads that are not necessarily permanent, based on the use of the space), snow loads, rain loads
  • Lateral Loads: wind loads, seismic loads
- Main parts of a structure
  • Floor system: includes slabs and beams
  • Supports: columns or walls (columns and walls take on increasing load as we go down a building, taking the most at the foundation)
  • Foundation: shallow (mat or spread footing) and deep foundations (piles, drilled piers, etc.)
  • Lateral system: concrete walls, braced frames resist seismic and wind forces (remember to balance/distribute the lateral system in building)
- Structural materials
  • Concrete (reinforced concrete, precast concrete, etc.) - concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension
  • Steel - preferred for longer spans with shallower framing
  • Wood
